Resident Teacher Biography
The present Dungyud Rinpoche is the 14th reincarnation of Drriri Dungyud Rinpoche and he is the one of the joint heads of Dirru monastery in Tibet and India. Gyalsay Tulku Rinpoche, the second head of the Driru monastery and elderly monks began searching for our present Dungyud Rinpoche in 19…... They were guided by the prediction of His Holiness Sakya Trizin, In 1978, he was found in a small Tibetan town called (red house) in Nepal near the Swayambhunath stupa. This stupa was regarded as one of the most precious and probably the oldest stupa in the history of Nepal since it is directly blessed and consecrated by a past Buddha called Buddha Kasapa. Swayambhunath is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in the parts of the temple. This stupa used to contain the most precious holy relics.
The architecture of the Swayambhunath stupa is symbolic. The dome at the base of the stupa represents the entire world. When a person awakes (represented by eyes of wisdom and compassion) from the bonds of the world, the person reaches the state of enlightenment. The thirteen pinnacles on the top symbolize that sentient beings have to go through the thirteen stages of spiritual realizations to reach enlightenment or Buddhahood. The stupa is an important pilgrimage site. Each morning before dawn hundreds of Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims climb the 365 steps that lead up the hill and perform clockwise circumambulations of the stupa.
Rinpoche was five years old when he was recognised as the 14th Dungyud Rinpoche and His Holiness Sakya Trinzin authenticated him as a reincarnation of Dungyud Rinpoche. Thereafter Rinpoche was invited to Driru monastery in Bir, in Himachal Pradesh in Northern India. Upon his arrival at Bir monastery, Rinpoche’s enthronement ceremony took place. Subsequently Rinpoche also received his first Lam Dre teaching for three months from His Holiness Sakya Trinzin at Dehradun Puruwala, another state in Northern India. From 1980-1990 Dungyud Rinpche was engaged in monastic training under the supervision of the great tantric tutor Chung du Lama Kalsang Gyaltso, who was also Abbot of Dirru monastery in Bir. As a great practitioner, Lama Kalsang Gyaltso lived his life as a saintly yogi.
Lama Kalsang Gyaltso made a great contribution towards Bir monastery. He performed all the profound practices and sacred prayers for the monastery. In 2001 he passed away at the age of 89. Following his passing, during the cremation, a most amazing miracle happened as a number of precious relics were produced from his bones. For three months every winter, from 1988 to 1998, Rinpoche attended teaching given by HH Sakya Trinzin on the "Collection of Tantra", including more than 388 empowerments. This is the biggest collection of all the major empowerments in the Sakya tradition. Each empowerment took two days to complete.
