The first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, this 8 metre high sacred Buddhist shrine houses many precious, holy objects - not unlike a time capsule. Blessed and constructed by the Tibetan Gyuto Monks, it is said to bring peace to the region in which it is built. If this is true, Crystal Castle and the Byron Bay Hinterland are now very blessed. It is also said to bring balance to the earth in times of war, conflict and environmental destruction.

The rare blue and gold stupa commands a striking presence on the hillside as you enter the Crystal Castle grounds. There are 32 Brass Prayer Wheels around the base of the Kalachakra Stupa, which send out 130 000 blessings of the sacred mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum when spun around. Crystal Castle plans to build another 100 Mani prayer wheels around the stupa in the future, as is the case with many Buddhist stupas in India, Nepal and Tibet.

Tibetans believe that walking clockwise around any sacred stupa (this circumambulation is called "Kora") brings great benefit to the mind, bringing us in tune with our innate goodness, inspiring compassion, goodness and therefore good karma. As you walk around the base, you might notice different symbols facing the four directions and a Tantric Kalachakra Statue housed in the small window at the top.

After you've been thoroughly blessed by the stupa, venture across to the Lotus Cafe for refreshments, purchase some crystals, maybe have a Tarot reading or wander the Buddha Walk, complete with giant statues of Lakshmi, Ganesh, Shakyamuni and Avalokiteshevara.
