The Canberra Soto Zen Group, an unincorporated not-for-profit association, was established in August 2012. The Group’s aims are:

To practice in the Soto Zen tradition in accordance with the teachings of Zen Master Dogen Zenji, taught by Zen Master Ekai Korematsu Osho, Teacher and Abbott of Jikishoan Zen Buddhist Community (JZBC). To provide an environment for and support to those in the Canberra region community who have an interest in the Soto Zen tradition and more generally in Zen Buddhism. To maintain a link with Zen Master Ekai Korematsu Osho, and encourage members of CSZG and interested individuals to do so.

We hold weekly ‘Zazenkai’ services, in the Soto Zen School (Mahayana Buddhism) tradition. If you come for the first time, please arrive 15 minutes beforehand for a brief introduction. The Zazenkai service includes two periods of zazen (seated meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), a tea ceremony, chanting and reciting of Buddhist sutras (in Japanese and in English), and a reading from Zen sources.

Other activities are planned during the year linked to Soto Zen practice: one day workshops, short retreats, talks and discussions by teachers in the Zen tradition. Membership of the group is desirable but everyone is welcome!

Zanzenkai services are held at 1 Tilden Place, Cook, on Sundays at 7:30-9:30 am and Thursdays at 6:30-8:00pm. A donation of $5 will be appreciated.
