Adelaide Sri Lanka Buddhist Vihara was established in 1996 to promote Theravada Buddhism. The temple engages in a broad scale of Dhamma activities including conduction of Dhamma sermons as well as Seela and Bhavana (meditation) programs for the benefit of both Sri Lankan and non-Sri Lankan Buddhist community in Adelaide, South Australia. The temple also offers a Dhamma education program to children in the community through the Dhamma School (Sinhala Buddhist School).

About Vihara

History

A handful of Buddhist devotees of the Sri Lankan community living in Adelaide gathered on the full moon Poya Day of Poson (June) 1996 and had an historical meeting to discuss about the establishment of Adelaide Sri Lanka Buddhist Vihara. As a result of their indefatigable effort it was possible to register the temple on the 14th of June 1996 and to open the temple at 13 Gardiner Avenue, in St Morris on the 12th of April 1997. Having located in St Morris for nearly two and half years, the temple was then moved to its current location at 13 Brookside Road in Athelstone, South Australia in September 1999.

Resident Monks

Several Theravada Bhikkus from Sri Lanka has been residing in the temple since its establishment. Currently there are two Theravada Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka residing in the temple to conform not only the mundane and also spiritual religious necessities of both Sri Lankan and non-Sri Lankan Buddhist community living in Adelaide.
